Cravings? Did I say cravings? Oh yeahhh, that's right. I forgot to clue you in on a very big piece of news that I've been (painfully) holding from you for a few weeks nows. Well folks, I'm preggers! You heard me: knocked up, preggo, with child, hiding a basketball, bun in the oven, etc etc. If you can forgive me for the near-absence on this site, I throw my hands up and blame it on sitting in front of the toilet and sleeping like a hibernating bear for the last two months. Oh and that wedding? Yeah, it's a shotgun. Because I'm classy like that.
But honestly, this was *semi* planned and we couldn't be more overjoyed. I'm about 15 weeks, due in January, and doing really well. Once the initial HOLY SHIT settled down and the hormones took a break from slamming me back and forth like a rag doll, everything sort of set in along with great calm and contentment. We are loving the ultrasounds, the weekly belly profile photo sessions, the surprise! announcement to family and friends, the initiation into the parenting world and accompanying advice, and reading each week's development on every baby site ever created. We are going to keep the gender a surprise and fingers crossed for a smooth pregnancy and delivery!
So back to the cravings—the big part I love to talk and hear about when it comes to the whole preggo party—there are only a recent few. The first three months were zero, zilch—I just tried to eat mildly and keep anything I could down. But now, ho ho, it's a different story. Things are starting to taste good, no, incredible. I couldn't look at meat until a week ago and all of a sudden hot wings are the best thing I've ever had—I want to chug the hot sauce straight. Or, whereas before I'd eat pizza and pasta only a handful of times a month, now I can put away half a Hawaiian pizza or multiple servings of lasagna no problemo. But really, more than anything, all I want is fresh fruit and fiber cereal. What does that mean? I've had about 50 nectarines in the last week and gone through boxes of Grapenuts, Special K, and Raisin Bran. And get this! I'm ten pounds lighter at 15 weeks than I was pre-pregnancy! I just don't understand it.
This tomato salad, the simplest summer side dish and one of my favorites, was an impulse a week or so ago and the-spot-hitter. Perfect alongside barbecued steak, rice and grilled sweet peppers. You can use goat cheese, feta, parmesan or mozzarella (I stuck with pasteurized mozzarella of course although how I do miss my goat cheese), red onions or not (I usually do but recently onions are repulsive), and serve it in a tossed mix, in stacks or on toothpicks, etc. It's solid in any variation.
